Pennington General: When Joshua's parents moved from NC. to KY. in 1797, he was some 19 or 20 years old and not married. So it is quite likely he went with the family in their various movings about. Joshua must have been an industrious, hard working farmer for in 1804 it is found he owned 100 acres of land on Line Creek in Barren Co. Two years later he married Polly, the daughter of William Gist, and the couple moved to TN. sometime later. In the White Co., TN, court minutes he was listed as a juror 1811-1812. The tax list for White CO. show he was taxed on 222 1/2 acres of land in 1816 and again in 1826 he is mentioned, as is a William Pennington who might have been one of his sons. In the 1820 White Co. Census, Then about 42, is listed having a wife, 2 sons b/t 10 and 16, 3 sons under 10 and 2 daughters also under 10. On 18 June, 1854 from his home at McMinnville, TN., he wrote about his children as follows: "We had eleven children: we raised six boys and four girls. Our youngest daughter died. They are all married and living as far as I know. My oldest son lives in Illinois. Two sons and one daughter in Texas, one son in the western district of TN. One son and one daughter in Nashville, TN., one son in Smithville, TN, one son and one daughter living near me." From PP1-1, pg 2. Comment- In the above statement about his children- It don't add up to 6 boys and 4 girls. It is 7 boys and 3 girls. So the above statement is in error. JF When Polly died on Oct., 1839, one son and three daughters were left at home with their father. Within three and a half years they were all married and Joshua was left alone. On 25 August, 1844 he and Sarah Howard were married. There were no children of this union. WIFE NOTES: Mary (Polly) Gist Birth: Mary was born in Washington Co., NC, now Green Co., KY on 13 Oct. 1786. Death(1): General: In the early days the boundary between KY. and TN. was not clearly defined, so the place of death of "Polly" might have been in White or Warren Co., TN. CHILD NOTES: William Pennington Birth(2): CHILD NOTES: Richard P. Pennington General: Had 14 children - 7 lived to maturity. CHILD NOTES: Granderson Pennington Birth(2): General: In the 1850 U. S. Census record of Warren County, Tennessee, Ganderson and Sarah Pennington appear with seven of their eight children. Ganderson's profession is shown as "Trader" and the birthblace of their children indicate that they lived in Illinois for a time in the 1830s but were living in Tennessee again when William P. was born in 1839. Ganderson died there in 1873 and was buried in Bethlehem Cemetery at Doyal, Tennessee where his father Joshua and grandfather Richard are also thought to have been buried. Nothing is known of Sarah's origins, family history, or ultimate fate. CHILD NOTES: John Pennington General: Lived in Houston Co., TX. Was in 1880 TX census. FAMILY NOTES HUSBAND NOTES: Joshua Pennington General: Joshua and Nancy had at least nine children. Known children are William, Rachel, Levi, Jesse, and Margaret. Possible other cheldren are David, James, and Hiram. Sometime after 1820, Joshua left Lee County, VA. and migrated to Floyd County, KY. About the same time, Micajah II, b. 1763 (probably Joshua's father) migrated to Harlan Co., KY. Joshua was in the 1830 Floyd County census and on the tax lists there in October, 1837. The 1840 census shows him with four sons and four daughters. His son, William, would have been married already and the head of his own household. Joshua was not shown as being a resident of Johnson County when it was formed in 1844 from Floyd County and other counties. In 1850, he was in Morgan County, KY., with children Levi, Jesse and Margaret still at home. He and his wife, Nancy, were living with son Jesse in the 1860 Johnson County census. He has not been found in the 1870 census. Joshua made a total of four attempts to get a War of 1812 Veteran Pension, beginning on 22 September, 1852, from Johnson County, KY. He was rejected for lack of required number of days of duty. Sixty days of active duty was the minimun requirment for a pension. In June, 1854, he applied for a pension from Morgan County, KY., and for bounty land on April 12, 1855, stating that he was 59 years old. He was rejected for the pension, but was granted 160 acres of land on Warrant #23284-160-55. It has not been found where or when he took possession of this land. He filed again on June 3, 1871, stating that he was then 79 years old. The results were the same. The pension law was liberalized in 1878 and he filed again from Paintsville, KY., where he lived on Hood's Creek. He was unsuccessful again. When he made both of the last two applications, he was accompanied by his son, Levi with whom he may have been living. He was, by this time, in his mid-eighties. His wife, Nancy died on 15 March, 1878, while Joshua was still alive in Johnson Co., KY., but he has not been found after that. It is unknown where and when he died. PP19-1, pg 19-27.
