FAMILY NOTES

Marriage(1):

HUSBAND NOTES: Richard Pennington

General: From Marvin Jones in PP1-1 1968 "Richard Pennington was born in Pennsylvania in 1748 according to one source or in 1752 according to another.  Either as a child or a young man he moved to the Yadkin River District of North Carolina.  There he married Hannah Boone, a sister of Daniel, in 1777.  They were married "nine miles of Shallow Ford above the Ford on the Yadkin River, Rowan City, North Carolina" according to one of their sons.  Richard was Hannah's second husband.

Her first, John Stewart, was killed while on a expedition to Kentucky with Daniel Boone. They lived the next twenty years in western North Carolina and just across the border in Virgina.  There was a Richard Pennington in Enoch Osborn's Montogomery City Company during the Revolutionary War.  Later, Richard was listed on the tax of what would the present day Grayson Co., VA.  The date was 1782.  In 1790, Richard was listed in the Wilkes Co. Census.  It was from Wilkes Co. on the 7th. of August, 1797 that they moved to Kentucky.  First, they settled on the Little North Elkhorn River, nine miles of the present city of Lexington.  From there, they moved south of the Green River to Barren (now Monroe) Co., KY.  Richard and his brother Timothy and their families settled on Line Creek near the present day hamlet of Gamaliel, Monroe County, KY.

Richard's son, Daniel Pennington, was still living there in 1853.  Sometime later, Richard and Hannah moved to White Co., TN. where Richard died on 21 Dec., 1813.  He was buried near Sparta, TN.  Following his death, Hannah returned to Monroe and lived the rest of her life at the home of her son, Daniel Pennington near Old Mill Creek Church.  She died on 9 April, 1828.  She is buried in the Old Mulkey Meeting House graveyard near Thompkinsville, KY. The children of Hannah Boone by her marriage to John Stewart were: Sarah Stewart b 1765  m John Osborn; Mary Stewart b 1766 m Solomon Osborn;  Rachel Stewart b 1768 m James King; Ann Stewart b 25 Feb 1770 m James Lewis.  All of these children migrated to Barren or nearby counties and lived near their parents at least for a while.

(A good share of the above information was taken from "Hannah Boone and Her Descendents" by Bess Hawthorne.)

WIFE NOTES: Hannah (Stewart) Boone

General: Hannah was the daughter of Squire and Sarah Morgan Boone.  Sister to the famous Daniel Boone.  Hannah had been married to John Stewart and had four girls before he was killed. They were Sarah b. 1765; m. John Osborn, Mary b. 1766; m. Solomon Osborn, Rachel b. 1768; m. James King, and Ann b.02-25-1770; m. James Lewis.

CHILD NOTES: Joshua P. Pennington

General: When Joshua's parents moved from NC. to KY. in 1797, he was some 19 or 20 years old and not married.  So it is quite likely he went with the family in their various movings about.  Joshua must have been an industrious, hard working farmer for in 1804 it is found he owned 100 acres of land on Line Creek in Barren Co.  Two years later he married Polly, the daughter of William Gist, and the couple moved to TN. sometime later.  In the White Co., TN, court minutes he was listed as a juror 1811-1812.  The tax list for White CO. show he was taxed on 222 1/2 acres of land in 1816 and again in 1826 he is mentioned, as is a William Pennington who might have been one of his sons.  In the 1820 White Co. Census, Then about 42, is listed having a wife, 2 sons b/t 10 and 16, 3 sons under 10 and 2 daughters also under 10.  On 18 June, 1854 from his home at McMinnville, TN., he wrote about his children as follows:  "We had eleven children:  we raised six boys and four girls. Our youngest daughter died.  They are all married and living as far as I know.  My oldest son lives in Illinois.

Two sons and one daughter in Texas, one son in the western district of TN.  One son and one daughter in Nashville, TN., one son in Smithville, TN, one son and one daughter living near me."  From PP1-1, pg 2.

Comment- In the above statement about his children- It don't add up to 6 boys and 4 girls. It is 7 boys and 3 girls.  So the above statement is in error. JF

When Polly died on Oct., 1839, one son and three daughters were left at home with their father.  Within three and a half years they were all married and Joshua was left alone.  On 25 August, 1844 he and Sarah Howard were married.

There were no children of this union.

CHILD NOTES: Daniel Boone Pennington

Death: Daniel Pennington died in Jackson Co., TN,  now Clay Co. TN

General: PP1-1, pg 2 & 3.

Daniel, the second of Richard and Hannah, was born 3 Dec., 1781 in North Carolina or Virgina and died at the age of 83 in persent day Clay Co., TN.  He was married on 20 Aug., 1805 in Barren Co., KY. to Esther Frailey the daughter of Christian and Elizabeth Frailey.  He is listed the 1810 census of Barren Co. with 1 male under 10, 1 male 16-26, 2 females under 10 and 1 female 16-26.  He, himself stated that he enlisted for six months and served in the War of 1812.

Daniel has a bounty land award in the Archives in Washington, D.C. but it gives no family information.

In a letter written to Dr. Draper on 17 April, 1853, from Monroe Co., KY., he relates, "I was in company with Col. Daniel Boone in 1798 in the month of February in Lexington, KY., and had much conversation with him about matters of minor importance.  If I could see you and converse with you perhaps you might gather something from it, but I could not write the little social conversations I had with him.  It would be too simple.  I would be wasting time and paper to no profit."

At the time of the writting Daniel was sick and a friend, Phillip Emmert, was doing the writing for him.

Sometime after 1854 he must have moved to Clay Co. TN. as he was living there in 1860.  His wife died in 1834 so he may have gone to TN. to live with one of his children.  In her book "Hannah Boone and Her Descendants", Miss Hawthorn lists Daniel's children together with dates of birth, deaths, marriages and names of spouses.

CHILD NOTES: John Stewart Pennington

General: PP1-1, pg 3

"John Stewart Pennington, third son of Richard and Hannah Pennington, was born 10 June 1784 either in NC. or just across the border in VA. He died 20 Sept. 1859 at the home of his son-in-law, William Pile, in Industry twp., McDonnough Co., IL.  He was buried in the Pennington Point Cem. in New Salem twp. in McDonough Co.  He was married on 24 March, 1807 to Miss Jemima Houser, daughter of Nickolas and Jane Houser of Barren Co., KY.

John Stewart, better known as Stewart, was still a child when the family moved to KY.  Like his father and older brothers he became a farmer.  When he was 22 yrs. of age, he married Jemima Houser.  They settled near Thompkinsville, Monroe Co., and it is believed eleven of their thirteen children were born there.

In the fall of 1829 he helped his son, Thos. Jefferson, and his family move to near Astoria, Fulton Co., IL. and then returned to his home in KY.  The following fall he and all of his family with the exception of two of the children moved to IL.  The two who remained in KY. were the oldest son, Nicholas Houser and who had a dry-goods store, and Nancy who had married J.E.D. Hammer.

They settled in McDonough Co. in the district known as Pennington Point.  This was the second family of the same name to settle in New Salem twp.

A little history of how Pennington Point received its name may be of interest to members of this branch of the family.  Pennington Point was the third settlement in the Co. and still retains its original name.  In 1834, Cyrus Walker is said to have named the district in honor of Stewart Pennington, although William Pennington was the first settler, having moved away and went to Spring Creek in the North Part of the Co.  The relationship between William and Richard has not been established but it probably was close.

Early in 1835 word came from KY. that Stewart's son, Nickolas Houser, had died and his business needed immediate attention.  So on April 7 Stewart left for KY. and did not return until June 1, when he brought with him the J.E.D. Hammer family.  He sold his Pennington Point farm to Mr. Hammer and bought the Jeff Pennington farm. (Probably his son, Thos. Jefferson).  He lived on the farm until the last month or so of his life.

After the death of his wife, Jemima, in 1852, it is quite probable Stewart made his home with various ones of his children.  He was 68 at that time and was probably unable to do any farming.  He was sick with consumption for the last 8 yrs. of his life.  In the late summer of 1859 he was taken to the home of William Bird and Nancy (Pennington) Pile to stay awhile and died there on Sept. 20.  He and Jemima are buried in the Pennington Point Cemetery, McDonough Co., IL.

Stew and Jemima were the parents of thirteen children all of whom were born in Barren Co., KY. with the exception of the two youngest who were born in McDonough Co., IL."

CHILD NOTES: Abigale Pennington

General: Abigail Pennngton, the youngest and only daughter of Richard and Hannah Pennington, was b. Jan 24, 1787, in NC. and d. in Alabama, date and place unknown.  On Dec 20, 1804 she was m. in Barren Co., KY. to William Gist Jr. who was b. in NC.  They moved to White Co., IL. in 1806 along with William's father and Abigail's brother, Joshua, who in that same year had m. Mary "Polly" Gist, sister of William.

After 1806 the name, William Gist, is listed in many court records of White Co., but no distinction is made as to whether it is William Sr. or William Jr.

At some later time the Gists moved to Alabama, probably to Jackson Co., where a William Gist appears on the 1840 census as having a family consisting of 1 male 50-60; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 5-10; 1 female 15-20; 2 females 10-15; and 1 female 5-10.  If this is the right William Gist, it is apparent that his wife, Abigail, had died before 1840.  Going by the age of the youngest child, Gist must have lost his wife between 1835 and 1840.  This is the only William Gist found in Alabama and the name does not appear in the 1850 census.

FAMILY NOTES

HUSBAND NOTES: Timothy Pennington

General: From Tennessee Tidbits 1778-1914 by Marjorie Hood Fisher & Ruth Blake Burns.

Shows the following on pg. 237: Pennington, Timothy - With his wife, Susanah, was an inhabitant of Barren Co., KY., 19 Nov. 1814, when their depositions were to be taken for the suit of Stephen & Mary Hayes, heirs of John Tucker, deceased, vs Joseph & Jane Ingleman, Enoch Tucker, Henry Tucker, James & Phoeba McFarland, Sarah Cagun (Eagun), John & Hanah Deamer, James B. & Nancy Nelson and Riggs Tucker by his guardian Henry Johnson. (Rob TN. Co. Ct. Min 3/522).  PP23-2, pg 76.

PP14-1 pg 26-27 gives this chronical of Timothy.

c 1740-50 born - date of birth in these records is only an estimate. c 1770-74 married prob. NC.  possible _________ Riggs. 1774 & 75 is in Surry Co., NC. tax lists.  (Riggs there:  Reuben, Edward,  David, William & Samuel) prior  1782 was in Washington Co., NC. what became TN.  Ref. Wash. Co. Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions p 149: 25 Feb. 1783, docket item 4: Thomas Hardiman vs. W. Been Senr., for part of a tract on Sinking Creek including Timothy Pennington's improvment.

(Sullivan Co., TN. map show a Big Sinking Creek & a Little Sinking Creek.  Both are south branches off Holston, persent Carter Co.) 1781, 82 &83 is in Cart.

Enoch Osborn's Co. of Militia-Montgomery Co., VA. 1782 & 1785 Montgomery Co., VA. tax lists. c  1786 - 88 Probably back in TN. as Riggs  (son) born there about this time gap until 1798 where he shows in Russell Co., VA. tax list 1799, 1800, 1801 & 1803 tax lists Russell Co., VA. tax lists. 2 Sept. 1803 Russell Deed Bk, 3 p 471 pays 40 lbs. for 100 acres on Mocassin Ridge. 12 Oct. 1803 Russell Deed Bk, 3 p 488 sells for 85 lbs 100 acres on Mocassin Ridge. 1805 & 1806 is in Lincoln Co., KY. 1m 21+ (self) & 1m 16-21 (Riggs) Moses, Asa, Joel & Simeon also are there. 1809 through 1816 is in every yr. of tax lists of Barren Co., KY. 1820 Monroe Co., KY. cut off & 1820 tax list there on Line Creek gives a Timothy with 75 acres, this is the only time he's in tax list there.  It could have been our Timothy, but probably was Timothy, son of Joshua, Sr. 1820, 22, 23, 24, 25 & 26 Monroe tax lists give a Timothy, poll tax only, on Salt Lick where Joshua, Sr. is.   I tend to believe this one is our Timothy as he was most generally with land.

If he is the one thru 1826, he probably died about this time.  I don't find him in the 1820 census, so this Timothy on the tax lists may have been Joshua's.

If he died in Monroe Co., he's most likely buried at Old Mulkey Church where others of our family (Richard's wife, Hannah Boone, etc.) are buried.

*1803 Asa in Lincoln Co.: 1804 Simeon & Moses join him; 1805 Timothy & Joel join them.  All 5 are still there in 1806.  1807-1809 lists are incomplete.  1810 is missing.

Other information shows Timothy died 1820-1824 in Schuyler Co., IL. Some evidence supports this as Riggs is shown in the 1820 Schuyler Co., Census with a male and female over 45 years of age living in their household.

CHILD NOTES: Asa Pennington

General: Twin to Simeon.

From Lawrence County Historical Society Bulletin - Jan/1976 (Missouri)

The Pennington family of Lawrence County traces from Asa Pennington, an early pioneer who came  ca. 1837-38.  We have not determined his ancestry as yet.

Asa was born 26 Aug. 1775, in North Carolina, according to the 1850 Census of Lawrence County, although some researchers say Virgina.  It should be noted several children were born in Virgina.

Pennington appears in the 1840 Census of Berry County with 1 male under 5; 2 males 20 to 30; 1 male 50 to 60; 1 female under 5; 1 female 20 to 30; and 1 female 50 to 60.  His sons Simon and Corbin Pennington appear with separate families.

Asa (74) and Rachel (72) appear as family No. 59 in the 1850 Census of Lawrence County.  Rachel's maiden name is given as Lane in Goodspeed's 1888 history, under the sketch of Timothy Connel (page 186, in the re-print edition).  She was born Ca. 1778-80, in Pennsylvania, according to the 1850 Census of Lawrence County.

Asa died 26 Sept. 1853, age 78y 1mo 1d.  His buried tomestone was discovered by Society President, Dan Stearns, several years ago on the Jesse Burns farm, south of Phelps.  Date of birth from the tomestone; date of death from tomestone and probate record.

Letters were granted on the estate of Asa Pennington 1 Nov. 1853 (Box 3, No. 78).  Bondsmen were William C. Pennington, Peter Pennington and Timothy Pennington.  Adminstrator was Wm. C. Pennington.

Affidavit of William C. Pennington states he (Asa) "died intestate on the 26th. day of September 1853," leaving the following Heirs: Sarah McGeehe, formerly Sarah Pennington, Corbin Pennington (Texas), Peter Pennington, Timothy Pennington, William C. Pennington, Frances Connell, formerly Pennington, all in Lawrence County, except Corbin Pennington.  Affidavit is dated 1 Nov. 1853.

Final settlement is dated 28 Aug. 1857.

CHILD NOTES: Moses Pennington

General: The family bible belonging to William, son of Moses, states that Moses was a son of Timothy. The 1820 census indicates that Moses had 11 children: 6 males and 5 females.

1820 census Crawford Co., IN. lists Moses:

2 males under 10 (1810-1820)

1 male 10-16 (1804-1810)

1 male 16-18 (1802-1804)

1 male 18-26 (1794-1802)

1 male 26-45 (1775-1794)

1 male over 45 (?-1775) - Moses

4 females under 10 (1810-1820)

1 female 16-26 (1794-1804)

1 female 0ver 45 (?-1775) - Anna

CHILD NOTES: Joel Pennington

General: Joel is with Timothy 1805 & 1806 in Lincoln Co., KY.  1808 thru 1814 is in Barren Co., KY.  He made his will, 26 Nov, 1818 in Crawford Co., IN.

Patsy, his wife is in Crawford Co. KY. in 1820.   Moses is also in Crawford Co.,IN. in 1820.  Riggs is in Franklin Co., IL.

1820 census, Crawford Co., IN. lists Patsy Pennington:

1 male under 10 (1810-1820)

1 male 10-16 (1804-1810)

1 female under 10 (1810-1820)

2 females 10-16 (1804-1810)

1 female 26-45 (1776-1795) - Patsy

None of these children have been indentified.  I wonder if some of Joel's children may have been raised by Riggs and counted as Riggs's children?

CHILD NOTES: Riggs Pennington

General: CHRONICLE OF RIGGS PENNINGTON - By Fran Laaker - PP26-1, pg 28-29.

c. 1785  Riggs was born in TN.  The 1860 Census shows him as 72, but when he d. in Jan. 1870, the Mortality Sched. shows his age as 84.

1798  Ref:  SOME ORIGANAL LAND GRANT SURVEYS ALONG GREEN RIVER IN LINCOLN & CASEY COUNTIES, KENTUCKY (1781-1836) shows Penneton, Riggs 1798-08-29 assigned claim to Isaiah Clifton.  In this same ref. brother Simeon has survey 1814-11-23, assigned claim to Thomas Robertson.  In 1797, Richard moved to KY.

Did Riggs go with him on this move?  We lose him until 1805.  Timothy shows just 2 m. in his household in 1798, Russell Co., VA. tax.  I believe Moses is the second male as Moses shows alone in the 1799, as does Timothy.

1805 & 1806 Lincoln Co., KY. tax lists - Timothy has 2 males in household.  I believe the second male is Riggs.

1810  Riggs shows alone in Barren Co., KY.

1810  Riggs not listed alone in census, but Timothy shows 2 males in household.

1810  (Deviation from article in PP)  Some records shows Riggs was married to Joanna Osborn.  Family tradition says Riggs and Joanna were married in 1815.

The 1810 date for the marriage, I think, is to try to account for the birth dates of Wesley, b. 1811, Stephen, b. 1813. It is the belief of this researcher that these two may be sons of his brother Joel.  See account in 1820 census, Franklin Co., IL.   The 1815 date for Riggs's marriage is the date that this researcher accepts.  The son Elijah, b. 1819 may be Riggs's with a wrong date of birth.  If he is a son of Riggs, then he was born after 1820.

1816  Riggs has moved his family to Crawford Co., IN.  (Ref:  HISTORY OF CRAWFORD CO., INDIANA,  By Hazen Pleasant, 1926, pp. 11-13). During 1816, Riggs Pennington bought farms in the Co.  (Ref:  OLD TRACT BOOK A, Crawford Co., IN., p. 25, 16 Feb. 1816 , with the Eastern half SE 80 acres of T35, Sec. 10, Range LW (Union), Riggs Pennington.)  Daniel Weathers to be the first Sheriff...The commission was iss. Sept. 8, 1818.  The bond of Sheriff Weathers is here given:  "Know all men by these presents:  that we, Daniel Weathers, James Barker, John Smith, Robert Yates, Thomas Roberts, Riggs Pennington, & Richard Weathers are held bound to Gov. Jennings.... (Ref:  THE HOOSIER JOURNAL OF ANCESTRY, INDIANA VII-2-15, Crawford Co. Civil Order Book A. 1819-20  Riggs had moved his family to Franklin Co., IL.  He is said to have been a surveyor, and he certainly kept on the move.  The 1820 State Census, IL., shows 2m. 21+ & 8 other whites in household.  The 1820 Federal Census:  1male 26-44 (self ca. 35);  1 male 45+ (may have been either his or Joanna's father);  2 females under 10;  1 female 10-15:  1 female 26-44 (Joanna, ca. 30); & 1 female 45+ (may have been either his or Joanna's mother).  (NOTE:  No males under 10.  If Wesley, Stephen and Elijah were sons of Riggs, then where are they? According to the 1820 census of Crawford Co., IN., there are 2 males about the right age to have been Wesley and Stephen in the household of Joel's widow, Patsy.   The 1830 census lists 3 males under 5; 1 male 5-10; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 30-40; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 10-15; 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-50.

1820-1822  The widow of Moses and Joel have moved to IL. to join Riggs.  This may account for the 8 other whites in the 1820 State census in IL.

CHILD NOTES: Simeon Pennington

General: Died after 1850.  He was living with his son Samuel in Jackson Co., TN. in 1850.

The 1850 U.S. Census lists him as being 75 yrs. old, born in NC.  If this census is correct and if the birth date of Asa as given on his gravestone (8/26/1775) is correct, then Asa and Simeon must be twins, as there is not any way that Simeon could have been born in 1775 otherwise.
