here was produced from the data contained in the John
French Master File (JFMF). Please
remember that much of the information came from
other Pennington researchers and depending on
the researcher's knowledge, expertise and sources,
may be in error. At times, John French, who
had researched the Pennington family for over
twenty-five years made decisions about what he
entered based on his own opinion.
FIRST GENERATION
1.
Josias Pennington (1) was born about 1741. He died on
November 3, 1810 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD.
He was married to Jemima
Hanson (daughter of
Jonathan Hanson and Sarah Spicer) on February 24,
1771 in Baltimore, Baltimore Co., MD, St. Paul's
Parish. (2)
Josias
Pennington and Jemima Hanson had the following
children:

Jonathan Hanson Pennington (3) was born on
April 19, 1772 in Baltimore Co., MD. Died as an
infant.

Edward Pennington (4) was born on March 2, 1773 in
Baltimore Co., MD.
Birth date estimated. Obvious
error in source shows date to be 03-02-1772.

Joshua Pennington (5) was born on January 13, 1775 in
Baltimore Co., MD.
He died in 1783.

She died on October 9, 1813. Date of
birth estimated.
Obvious error in source shows date to be

She was married to John
Wright.
6.
Mary Pennington (11) was born on January 13, 1779 in
Baltimore Co., MD.
She died on December 7, 1850.
She was married to Josias
Rutter in Cecil Co., MD.

Ann Stevenson Pennington (12) was born on December 17, 1791 in
Baltimore Co., MD.
She died on November 6, 1857.
She was married to Samuel
Jacobs.

Josias Pennington II (13) was born on June 2, 1797 in
Baltimore Co., MD.
He died on May 22, 1874. Josias
Pennington, private, Capt. David Warfield's Co.,
MD Militia, enlisted: Sept. 25,
1814 in Baltimore, MD, discharged Oct. 18, 1814.
Enlisted Oct. 19, 1814, private, Capt. Wm. Cooke,
Jr.'s Co.; discharged Nov. 19, 1814, Baltimore,
MD.
Josias Pennington, age 54,
resident of the City of Baltimore, MD, files June
2, 1852 for bounty land under the 1850 act. He served
as a private in Capt. Warfield's Co., 5th Regt. MD
Militia, under Col. Sterett in the 1812 War. He was
drafted about Aug. 19, 1814 and served and was
discharged with the company. He does
not remember receiving any written discharge, or
if he did, it is mislaid.

He wants his warrant
forwarded to Charles J. Pennington, Baltimore, MD.
Letter Nov. 6, 1852 from
Chas. J. Pennington, attorney at law, Baltimore: Several months ago he forwarded
the claim of Josias Pennington and Mrs. Alexander
Murray. The
claim of J. Pennington was rejected on the grounds
that the muster rolls only showed service of 2
days less than one month. He is
prepared to prove he was present at the Battle of
North Point and served more than one month.
Third Auditor reports Jan.
11, 1853: Josias
Pennington served in Capt. David Warfield's Co. MD
Militia from Sept. 25, 1814 to Oct. 18, 1814 and
in Capt. Wm. Cooke, Jr.'s Co. from Oct. 19, to
Nov. 19, 1814.
Josias Pennington, age 58,
resident of Baltimore City, files June 26, 1855 of
Baltimore City, MD for bounty land under the 1855
act. He
served as private in Capt. D. Warfield's Co.,
Baltimore United Vols. in the 5th Regt., MD under
Col. Joseph Sterrett. He
volunteered about Aug. 19, 1814 at Baltimore City
and was discharged there about Nov. 18, 1814. He has
applied for and received bounty land for 40 acres
(record says 80 acres) under the 1850 act which he
has legally disposed of.

He was married to Sophia
Cooke Clapham (daughter of
Jonas Clapham and Catherine Cooke) on January 10,
1826 in MD.
Sophia
Cooke Clapham (14) was born
on November 10, 1803 in MD. She died
on November 5, 1875. Josias
Pennington II and Sophia Cooke Clapham had the
following children:
