Family Group 20 originates in Morris and
Somerset Counties in New Jersey with a probable connection to the Penningtons of
Newark, Essex County New Jersey. By 1850, descendents of this family can be
found in Jefferson County New York, Fulton County Ohio, and Macoupin and Pike
Counties in Illinois. Further information on these family lines can be obtained

Timothy Pennington abt. 1715 – Nov/Feb 1749/50
At this time Timothy Pennington d. Nov-Feb 1749/50 of Mendham, Morris Co. NJ
is the oldest documented Pennington in PRA Family Group 20. The time and place
of his death is documented by his will written 30 Oct 1749 and proved 22 Feb
1750 in Mendham. An inventory of his estate was performed on 25 Feb 1750. He
leaves his estate to his wife and three sons that were not of age at the time of
his death. Family historians believe that Timothy Pennington is the son of
Ephraim III Pennington, grandson of Ephraim Pennington of CT progenitor of PRA
group 1. This belief is based upon the diary of Major William Sanford
Pennington 1757-1826, Governor of New Jersey. Because church records in the
Whippany [1719], Basking Ridge [1717], and Mendham [c.1720] Presbyterian
churches are not extant until the 1760’s and land and tax records are spotty for
western New Jersey, this line will most likely remain undocumentable. It is
also speculated that Ephraim Pennington of PRA group 4 is a brother of Timothy.
DNA testing strongly indicates that these lines are related. An additional
possible brother that is being researched is Levi Pennington of Hardwick Twp.
Morris/ Sussex/ Warren Co. NJ. A New Jersey Proprietors Land Grant was made to
a Levi Pennington in Hardwick Twp. Morris Co. (now Warren) NJ in 1750, in a line
directly west of Mendham, Morris Co. NJ.

"The first settler in America was Ephraim
Pennington who came to New Haven in 1643. He died in 1661 leaving his widow,
Mary, a daughter Mary, and a son Ephraim. The son in 1667 married Mary the
daughter of John Brockett and the same year came to Newark. He had two sons, a
third Ephraim who settled in Mendham, and Judah, who remained in Newark, dying
there sometime prior to 1738. Judah was survived by his widow Anne, who died in
1749, a daughter Experience, who died young and a son, Samuel, also a lifelong
resident of Newark."
Timothy Pennington had three known children:
1. Elijah Pennington
2. Jonathan Pennington was born in 1737 in
Mendham, Morris Co. NJ and died 9 Oct 1815 in Basking Ridge, Somerset Co. NJ.
He is buried Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, Basking Ridge, Somerset Co. NJ.
3. Ephraim Pennington
Jonathan Pennington 1737 – 9 Oct 1815
Jonathan Pennington was about 13 years old at
the time of his father Timothy’s death in 1750. Jonathan was born in 1737 in
Mendham, Morris Co. NJ and died 9 Oct 1815 in Basking Ridge, Somerset Co. NJ.
He is buried at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, Basking Ridge, Somerset
Co. NJ. He is listed as a pew-holder of Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church.
Jonathan married Osee Doty daughter of John Doty and Osee Skillman of Middlesex
and Somerset Co. NJ. Osee Doty had 4 brothers that fought together in the 1st
Battalion, Somerset Co. Militia, Capt. Jacob Ten Eycks Company during the
Revolution. John, Thomas, Levi, Skillman, and John. An additional brother
Cornelius Doty was a Captain in the Albany Co. NY Militia, 16th Regiment.
Information on the Doty family is documented in "Mayflower Families Through Five
Generations, Volume 11, Part 2, Edward Doty/ compiled by Peter B. Hill,
published 1996 by the General Society of Mayflower Descendents.
Jonathan Pennington is documented in census
