Richard, WV

FIRST GENERATION

1. Richard Pennington was born about 1750. He died aft 1814 in Pendleton Co., VA. Richard Pennington settled in Pendleton County, (West) Virginia in the late 1700's and became the progenitor of many West Virginia Penningtons.

His ancestors and place of origin are still unknown. Limited information suggests that he may have come from Delaware or the eastern shore of Maryland. It is suspected that he may have been related to Elijah Pennington, who lived in Hampshire County, WV from about 1784 to 1826. NOTE:  Elijah Pennington, herein referred to, is the son of Benjamin Pennington (Group IX).

He was married to Eleanor Prichard. Eleanor Prichard was born about 1750.

Richard Pennington and Eleanor Prichard had the following children:

+2 i. Richard Pennington Jr. (born on September 24, 1770).

+3 ii. Priscilla Pennington (born about 1772).

4 iii. Barbara Pennington was born about 1775 in VA. She died in 1798.

5 iv. John Pennington was born about 1777 in VA.  John left home and was never heard from again.

+6 v. Placy Pennington (born about 1780).

SECOND GENERATION

2. Richard Pennington Jr. was born on September 24, 1770 in VA. He died on August 24, 1851 in Randolph Co., VA.

4. Pennington, Richard Jr. 14 Aug 1811 Pendleton County 100 a. on Bullpasture Run a branch of Jacksons River on the east side of Freels land Grants 61, p. 613

He was married to Mary E. "Polly" Bennett (daughter of John Bennett and Unknown) on April 1, 1793 in Franklin Co., VA. Mary E. "Polly" Bennett was born about 1773. John Bennett names Polly and Richard in his will. Richard Pennington Jr. and Mary E. "Polly" Bennett had the following children:

+7 i. Catherine "Kate" Pennington (born on December 8, 1793). Catherine married Isaac Nelson on Feb. 25, 1828 in Pendleton Co., VA/WV. Isaac Nelson was born abt. 1773 and died abt. 1850. He was the son of John Nelson and Sarah Stern. Catherine "Kate" Pennington and Isaac Nelson had the following children: Elizabeth, Prudence, Isaac J., Mary "Polly", Ruhama, Sarah, and George Marion.

+8 ii. Eva Pennington (born on August 2, 1795).

Eve Pennington married William Johnson on April 8, 1817 in Pendleton Co., WV.

+9 iii. Jesse Pennington (born on November 22, 1797). Jesse Pennington married abt. 1822 to Jennie Camel born abt. 1795.

+10 iv. Priscilla Pennington (born on June 4, 1800).  Priscilla Pennington never married but had children.

+11 v. John Pennington (born on October 3, 1802).

John Pennington married Winifred "Winny" Thompson on July 2, 1827 in Pendleton Co., WV. She was the daughter of William Thompson and Acquilla Breeding. Winefred Thompson was born abt. 1803 and died abt. 1887. John Pennington and Winny had the following children: Sidney, Nathaniel, Elizabeth, Mary Ellen, Diane, Vincent E., and Jesse.

+12 vi. Samson Pennington (born on March 4, 1805).

Sampson Pennington married Mary Montoney on Nov. 12, 1828 in Pendleton Co., WV. Mary Montoney was born abt. 1803, and was the daughter of Albert Montoney

+13 vii. Solomon A. Pennington (born on May 27, 1807).

Solomon A. Pennington married Virginia Jane Wyatt on Nov. 3, 1835 in Pendleton Co., VA/WV. Virginia Jane Wyatt was born abt. 1815 and the daughter of Samuel and Matilda Wyatt. Solomon A. Pennington and Virginia Wyatt had the following children: Mathias Matthew, Simeon, Edmond, Samuel E., Rebecca Anna,

William Hammond, Mary Margaret, Solomon Judy, George W., Jacob M., Isaac W., Martha Elizabeth, John F. and Priscilla Jane.

Samuel C. Pennington married Lydia Davis on Aug. 5, 1843 in Pendleton Co., VA/WV. Lydia Davis was born abt. 1824 and the daughter of Thomas Davis.

Samuel C. Pennington and Lydia Davis had the following children: Mary E., Sarah C., Richard M., Reuben H., Vincent D., Priscilla Jane, Nancy M., Thomas M., John S., Almira, William L., and Isaac M.

+15 ix. Vinson B. Pennington (born on February 4, 1813). Vincent B. Pennington married Phoebe Flanagan on June 26, 1856 in Randolph Co., WV. Phoebe Flangan was born March 23, 1837 and died Jan. 24, 1918. She was the daughter of John Flanagan and Mary Roy. Vincent B. Pennington and Phoebe Flanagan had the following children: Susan W., Marcela, Adela, Ardela, Emma Jane, Melvina, Sampson, Vincent B., Lillie V., Alice, Sarah, and Floyd W.

Reubin Hedrick was born abt. 1812 and died abt. 1894, was the son of Adam Hedrick and Catherine Judy. Eleanor "Ellen" Pennington and Reubin Hedrick had the following children: Lenora, William P., James, Mary Christian, George W., Sylvester, Minor H., and Susan Jane.

Margaret Pennington married Solomon Roy on Nov. 11, 1841 in Pendleton Co., VA/WV. Solomon Roy was born abt. 1820 and the son of Joseph Roy and Sarah Summerfield. Margaret Pennington and Solomon Roy had the following children:

Emily, Mary C., Isaac, Solomon A., John Pleasent, Jacob, Jesse, Sarah, Martha, and Martin.

She was married to Thomas Davis on January 19, 1792 in Pendleton Co., VA.

Priscilla Pennington and Thomas Davis had the children:

6. Placy Pennington was born about 1780 in VA. Moved to Idaho in 1816.

(Mary Pennington was born abt. 1768 in SC and died abt. 1850)

She was married to Robert Minnis abt. 1795, and had the following children:

Betsy, Anna, Robert P., John, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Wheeler.

Notes: According to the 1850 Census of Tipton Co., IN, Jefferson TWP micro film it lists a male at the age of 51 by the name of R. P. Minnis, no occupation, born in Va. and could not read; Mary age 51, born in Va., could not read; Sarah age 23, born in Va.; Mary age 17 born in Va., Rebecca age 16, born in Va., Margaret age 12, born in Va., and Mary Minnis age 82, born in SC could not read and blind. 1850 Tipton Co., IN census, Jefferson TWP, p. 274 Mary's age is listed as 82 on the census.

The R. P. Minnis listed in this 1850 Census of Tipton Co., IN was the son of Mary Pennington and Robert Minnis.

Recorded in Pendleton, 4th August, 1804. (Polly/Palcy seems to be the middle name for Mary).

3. Minness, Robert 12 Mar 1799 Pendleton County 150 a. on the the west side of north fork and opposite his former lands and adjoining Johnson Phares's land.  Grants 41, p. 104
