Family Group 10

Thomas, 1630, Surry Co., VA

Introduction

The information which appears here was produced from the data contained in the John French Master File (JFMF).  Please remember that much of the information came from other Pennington researchers and depending on the researcher's knowledge, expertise and sources, may be in error.  At times, John French, who had researched the Pennington family for over twenty-five years made decisions about what he entered based on his own opinion.

As soon as an updated Family Group Summary Description is ready, it will be posted here.  Check back often for updates.

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Thomas Pennington was born about 1640 in England.  He died about 1702 in Surry Co., VA.  It is well documented that the ancestor of the Pennington family in Surry Co., VA. was Thomas Pennington (1640-1701).  His father may have been Edward Pennington, but that has not been clearly established. Early records have the name spelled "Pedington". Thomas's marriage to Sarah George is confirmed by the will of Col. John George dated 2 Aug. 1678, wherein he referes to his daughter "Sarah Peddington".  She first married Morgan Lewis, by whom she had three daughters.  Morgan Lewis died in 1677 and since Col. George's will of 1678 refers to his daughter as Sarah Peddington, she must have remarried either late 1677 or early 1678.

Will of Thomas Pennington, dated 13 Feb. 1701/02.  "To my oldest son Thomas Pennington my house and land after my wife's death.  To my three sons, three guns, ye oldest to have his choice, and so to the youngest, the rest of my estate to my wife Abigail and three children."

The family of Thomas and Sarah George is listed in Pennington Pedigrees 24-2, pg 10.

He was married to Sarah George (daughter of Col. John George) about 1678 in Surry Co., VA.   Sarah George was born about 1645 in Surry Co., VA.  She died after January 16, 1694 in Surry Co., VA.1  Sarah was the widow of Morgan Lewis.  Thomas Pennington and Sarah George had the following children:

            +2              i.    Jane Pennington (born about 1681).

+3             ii.    Thomas Pennington (born about 1682).

+4            iii.    Edward Pennington (born in 1688).

+5           iv.    John Pennington (born about 1691).

He was married to Abigail after 1694 in Surry Co., VA.

SECOND GENERATION

2.  Jane Pennington was born about 1681 in Surry Co., VA.

She was married to Francis Hutchins.

3.  Thomas Pennington was born about 1682 in Surry Co., VA.  He died on December 20, 1727 in Surry Co., VA.  WILL OF THOMAS PENNINGTON, Deed Book 7, pg 772, Surry Co., VA.  Pennington Pedigrees 9, #2, pg 20

MEMORANDUM:  It is my will and desire that my Executor shall sett all my children free as they shal severally att. the age of nineteen years.  Will made Feb. 24, 1726/27.  Prob. at a Court held Surry Co. Dec.20, 1727.

Thomas does not mention his son Benjamin in his will, but mention is made in the will of Edward Pennington, naming Benjamin as his brother.

From Surry County, Virginia Order Book 1961-1713, p 230: "Thomas Pedington the son of Thomas Pedington, making it appear that he is almost twenty years of age, upon his petition is allowed to have the benefit of his own labour.  At a court held at Southwark for the County of Surry, 27th Nov. 1702."

He was married to Mary Allen (daughter of Maj. Arthur Allen and Katherine Baker) in 1711.   Mary Allen was born about 1692.  She died after 1757.  This Mary Allen is speculated to have been the wife of Thomas Pennington (1682).

Other information shows Thomas's wife to be Mary Hun (Hunne) (1685). Another speculation is that Thomas's wife may have been Mary Alstin.  A witness to Thomas's will was a Thomas Alstin. JF  Thomas Pennington and Mary Allen had the following children:

            +6              i.    Thomas L. Pennington (born about 1713).

4.  Edward Pennington was born in 1688 in Surry Co., VA.  He died in 1727/28 in Surry Co., VA.  In Surry Co., VA. Probate of Estate: 17 April 1728.  Edward Pennington made his will Nov. 20, 1727 and presented by Tabitha Pennington. Legatees were; son Edward to have land and plantation where I now live, 230 acres at mouth of Wyche's Swamp Branch.  The mother of lessee to have for her widowhood the land and plantation; to son John, 230 acres at mouth of Ingon Branch; to son Edmond the remaining part of land between Edward and John, 230 acres. (Book 7-799); Davis 131. Presented by Tabitha Pennington, 17 April, 1728.

He was married to Tabitha in 1710.   Edward Pennington and Tabitha had the following children:

          +13              i.    Edward Pennington (born about 1711).

+14             ii.    John Pennington (born about 1713).

+15            iii.    Edmond Pennington (born about 1715).

+16           iv.    Thomas Pennington (born about 1716).

5.  John Pennington was born about 1691 in Surry Co., VA.  He died about 1766.  The family of John and Phillis is listed in Pennington Pedigrees 24-2, pg 10.

The will of John Pennington was probated 19 June, 1766 (Sussex County Will Book B. 78) refers to "my beloved wife Philiss".  John Pennington left a respectable estate, giving a plantation to each of his two living sons, plus 20 slaves and numerous cattle, horses, hogs, and sheep, to be divided amongst his heirs. Each of his daughters married "Wrens".

There were two wills probated on 6/19/1766 in Sussez Co., VA.  One is the one mentioned here and the other is of John's nephew, John, son of his brother Edward, known as "the carpenter".  It is not known if the two Johns died together as the result of a common accident or separately of natural causes and we will probably never find out.

He was married to Phyllis Forte (daughter of Elias Forte) in 1713.   Phyllis Forte died in 1765.  John Pennington and Phyllis Forte had the following children:

          +17              i.    Moses Pennington (born about 1715).
