Introduction

The information which appears here was produced from the data contained in the John French Master File (JFMF).  Please remember that much of the information came from other Pennington researchers and depending on the researcher's knowledge, expertise and sources, may be in error.  At times, John French, who had researched the Pennington family for over twenty-five years made decisions about what he entered based on his own opinion.

Sue Webb and Rod Pennington, Co-Group Leaders, are working hard to update this information.  As soon as an updated Family Group Summary Description is ready, it will be posted here.  Check back often for updates.

FIRST GENERATION

1.  Abraham Pennington was born on October 6, 1694 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.  He died before May 29, 1756 in Berkeley Co., SC.  Will dated 7/21/1755, probated 5/29/1756, in Berkeley Co., SC., names family of Abraham.  Names wife, Catherine, Isaac, Jacob, Abraham, John and Abigail.  Son Isaac was executor.  Pennington Pedigrees 7-1, pg. 21.  Abraham and Katrina were married in "Christ Presbyterian Church" in Philadelphia, PA.  Abraham was issued a patent to land in Orange County, VA. on October 3, 1734 on west side of Shendoah River beginning at head of branch--Deed Bk. 15 p. 34

"The Pennington's came to SC., it is believed, from Fredrick Co., VA., which is the most northern part of VA., close to PA.  The boundaries here were for a long time, in dispute.  In the VA. State Library, in Cartmells's SHENANDOAH VALLEY PIONEERS AND THEIR DESCENDENTS p. 19 is found the following reference:  First Court Records of November Session, 1743, the third item in Court Minutes p. 20 "Abram Pennington in open court acknowledged his Deed of Lease to Christopher Beeler". Records of survey of land for early settlers were established there as "squatters" at earlier date than official survey.

The Penningtons moved further south into Orange Co., VA. and later into SC.  Abraham Pennington petitioned the King for land on Indian Creek in SC. on 4 Feb., 1752.  Abraham in his Will dated 1755 names his wife Catherine, his sons:  Isaac, Jacob, Abraham, John and a daughter Abigail.  Isaac is named executor being the oldest son.

Son Jacob petitioned for land in 1749, stating that he is from PA. Son Isaac stating that he is from VA., petitioned for 50 acres of land near the Sante and Collins Rivers, so that he might establish an iron works.  These petitions were made on the same day as those of his brother-in-law, Charles King, 1 April 1754.

Isaac Pennington was a captain in the Colonial Wars and is so listed in the History of Orange Co., VA. by Scott (appendix, p. 258)." Pennington Pedigrees 2-1, pg. 59.

Isaac's birth date is his chr. date in Old Swede Church, Phila., PA.

He was married to Katrina (Katharina) Weister on August 16, 1714 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA, Christ Presbyterian Church.   Katrina (Katharina) Weister was born on May 20, 1695 in Hilsbach, Baden, Germany.  She died on December 16, 1744 in St. George Parish, GA.  She was buried in Fishersville, Augusta Co., VA.  Abraham Pennington and Katrina (Katharina) Weister had the following children:

Isaac Pennington was born on May 16, 1715 in Albemarie Co., VA.  He died on September 17, 1760 in Enoree, Berkeley Co., SC.  (The following information about Isaac Pennington and his wife, Mary, was taken from a photo-copy of the will of Isaac Pennington, probated 17 Sept. 1760, in Berkeley Co., SC..  Isaac left as executor of his will his wife, Mary Pennington.  In the last will and testament of Isaac Pennington, four of his sons-in-law were named.)  Pennington Pedigrees 7-1, pg 21.

3.  Jacob Pennington was born on December 12, 1716 in PA.  He died on September 16, 1774 in Charleston Co., SC.  Jacob was a Blacksmith.  Apparently the earliest member of the Pennington family to migrate to Newberry Co. SC was Jacob Pennington, son of Abraham.  Jacob Pennington appeared in 1747 in Frederick Co. VA Deed Bk. 1, p 293 in a deed involving John Hardin and again in 1747 (Frederick Co Deed Bk. 1, p 94), a power of attorney from Jacob Pennington to Isaac Pennington.  He appeared in one Fairfax Co. minutes recorded in 1749 when he was plaintiff in a suit with Joseph West and John Hardin.  In 1749 Jacob Pennington bought land from John Frasher and wife Elizabeth on the low grounds of the Congaree (Charleston Deed Bk. B-3, p 80).  In 1749 Jacob Pennington petitioned for 350 acres of land on the Savannah River and stated the came form PA with his wife and 5 children (SC Council Journal No. 17, p 105). SC conveyed to Alexander Lockart of Tryon, NC 300 acres on south side Broad River on King's River now Enoree above William Ferguson's land including Great Cane Bottom.  Witnesses included John Pennington (Deed Abstracts of Tryon, Lincoln, and Rutherford Co., NC, p 372).

Wagon roads were a necessity for the early settlers of Ninety Six District because they had to haul their supplies the many miles from the settlements of Charleston and others along the Atlantic Coast. Commissioners were appointed to lay out and oversee the building of these roads.  One such road went from Indian Island Ford to Hendrick's Mill on the Enoree River and Jacob Pennington was one of the commissioners appointed to oversee its construction. This road later became known as the Ninety Six Road.     The date of birth given for Jacob Pennington is his chr. date.
