Family Group 3
Paul of Sunbrick,
1627 Lancashire, England
Introduction
The information which appears
here was produced from the data contained in the John
French Master File (JFMF). Please
remember that much of the information came from
other Pennington researchers and depending on
the researcher's knowledge, expertise and sources,
may be in error. At times, John French, who
had researched the Pennington family for over
twenty-five years made decisions about what he
entered based on his own opinion.
Trisha Bennett is working hard to update this
information. As soon as an updated Family
Group Summary Description is ready, it will be
posted here. Check back often for
updates.
FIRST GENERATION
1.
Paul Pennington was born on September 21,
1627 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish, North
Lancashire, England. He was
christened on October 21, 1627 in Colton,
Lancashire Co., England.1 He died on
January 28, 1719 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish,
North Lancashire, England. He was
buried on January 30, 1719 in Sunbrick, Aldingham
Parish, North Lancashire, England. The
marriage of Paul Pennington and Ann Simpson is
recorded in the Parish of Aldingham, North
Lancashire, England. The same
register of the Parish of Aldinham, which records
the marriage of Paul and Ann, shows the baptism on
23 August 1637 of an Anne Simpson and her sister
Alice, daughters of Christopher Simpson, of
Scales. The
records of the parish church at Urswick in Furness,
a few miles from Sunbreak, show the marriage of
Christopher Simpson and Elizabeth Marr on 6
February 1629.
There is a Christopher Simpson, later a
member of the Swarthmore MM, who was buried 23
February 1681 at Sunbreak. Pennington
Pedigrees 12-2, pg 3.
The dates of death and burial
of Paul and Ann are recorded in "Swarthmore
MM burials (1650-1760); see also Pennington
Pedigrees 8-1, pg 18. No attempt
has been made to convert dates to the present day
calendar.
The hamlet of Sunbreak
(sometimes Sunbrick or Sunbreck , according to the
English, (Sunbrick) is located near the western
shore of Morecambe Bay southwest of Bardsea, and
lies between Urswick and Aldinham. It is a
few miles south of Ulverson, and not far from
Pennington in Furness, supposed according to local
tradition to have been named for a powerful North
Lancashire family which is said to have built a
castle on a neighboring hilltop well befor the
Norman Conquest.
The family is listed in the famous Domesday
Book under the name PENNIGETUN.
Sunbreak is no longer shown
on most maps of the district but is named in the
19th century guide books. The
village was also not far from Swarthmore Hall,
formerly the residence of George Fox, founder of
the Quaker sect, who gave his first preaching in
1647. The
Group III immigrants to Pennsylvania brought with
them certificates of removal from Swarthmore MM in
Lancashire. Some
of the Philadelphia area historical societies have
photostats of these certificates.
Swarthmore MM records the
birth dates of Paul and Ann's children.
No proof of parentage of
Paul. Pennington
Pedigrees 12-2, pg 3 shows that Paul was either
the son of Robert or another Paul. This
linage is in these records to show a possible
connection of Group 3 Penningtons to the other
Penningtons that came to America.
He was married to Ann (Anne)
Simpson (daughter of
Christopher Simpson and Elizabeth Marr) on
October 27, 1655 in Aldinham Parish, North
Lancashire, England.
Ann
(Anne) Simpson was born about 1637 in
Aldinham Parish, North Lancashire, England. She died
on February 9, 1695 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish,
North Lancashire, England. She was
buried on February 10, 1695 in Sunbrick, Aldingham
Parish, North Lancashire, England. Paul
Pennington and Ann (Anne) Simpson had the
following children:
+2
i.
Elizabeth Pennington (born on July 28,
1656).
+3
ii.
William Pennington (born on November 28,
1657).
4
iii.
Mary Pennington was born on December 20,
1665 in Aldinham Parish, North Lancashire,
England. She
died in 1730.
SECOND GENERATION
2.
Elizabeth Pennington was born on July 28,
1656 in Aldinham Parish, North Lancashire,
England. She
was buried on April 8, 1686 in Sunbrick, Aldingham
Parish, North Lancashire, England.
She was married to George
Mitchell.
3.
William Pennington was born on November
28, 1657 in Berkclife, Aldingham Parish, North
Lancashire, England. William
Pennington and Margaret Hall were married at the
home of Joseph Good, of Berkclife, Aldinham,
Lancashire. All
dates are as recorded in the records. This was
before the calendar change and the dates are two
months earlier than they would be on the present
day calendar.
He was married to Margaret
Hall (daughter of
Daniel Hall and Elizabeth Addison) on March 22,
1688 in Berkclife, Aldingham Parish, North
Lancashire, England.
Margaret
Hall was born on December 15, 1667 in
England. The data is from "Colonial
and Revolutionary Lineages, V. 9, Pennington
Pedigrees 545-6. (Also see Pennington Pedigrees
8-1, pg 17).
According to Lineages, Margaret Hall was
the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Addison)
Hall of Roosebeck, parish of Aldingham and the
granddaughter of Leonard and Elizabeth (Wyman)
Addison. Ref.
A, reports that Daniel (bur. 12-1mo-1671) m.
17-7mo-1665) Elizabeth Addison (bur. 12-1mo-1671)
and that Leonard Addison (bur. 8-4mo-1686) m.
(9-7mo-16-6) Elizabeth Wyman. William
Pennington and Margaret Hall had the following
children:
+5
i.
Elizabeth Pennington (born on December 5,
1688).
6
ii.
Ann Pennington was born on November 14,
1690 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish, North
Lancashire, England. She died
on March 1, 1691 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish,
North Lancashire, England. She was
buried on March 1, 1691 in Sunbrick, Aldingham
Parish, North Lancashire, England.
7
iii.
Paul Pennington was born on December 5,
1691 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish, North
Lancashire, England. She died
about 1772 in Baltimore Co., MD. There is
no record of death for Paul (b. 1691). Furthrtmore
there is no record of any marriage. The
Abington minutes, which refer to him many times,
never make reference to a wife or any issue. It is
therefore difficult to believe that he was ever
married. Still,
his repeated attempts to obtain land do suggest
the profile of a family man struggling to make
both ends meet.
He was certainly less successful than
either of his brothers Daniel and Thomas, who
ended up prosperous landowners.
+8
iv.
Daniel Pennington (born on August 17,
1694).
9
v.
Mary Pennington was born on November 12,
1696 in Sunbrick, Aldingham Parish, North
Lancashire, England. She died
on November 28, 1696 in Sunbrick, Aldingham
Parish, North Lancashire, England.
+10
vi.
Thomas Pennington (born 31 Nov 1697).
+11
vii.
Margaret Pennington (born on July 30,
1705).
