How to Participate in the PRA's DNA Study

If you want to participate in the PRA's DNA Study, follow these steps:

  • Family Tree DNA (FTDNA - the company we use for the DNA tests) will handle the administration of the future participants in our DNA Study, including accepting payment for the testing.

  • The interested party is directed to the FTDNA website (http://www.familytreedna.com/) where they click on Surname Projects on the left side of the page, chose ā€œPā€ and then "Pennington" and then read the Pennington study blurb.

  • Next request to join the PRA DNA Study, and get our group rate (BIG SAVINGS over public prices)

  • Next, the DNA Study Coordinator replies with a join code if the test will work for them. The current DNA tests available are:

  1. Y-DNA 37 Markers Test  - Public prices is $169 - PRA discount price is $149 - $20 discount.  PRA recommends the Y-DNA 37 Markers Test for our Study.

  2. Y-DNA 67 Markers Test - Public price is $268 - PRA discount price is $238 - $30 discount.
  • Once you have paid and entered the study, FTDNA will then send you a kit for your sample (simple and painless). You send it back to them and your result will be sent to you via a secure web link. The study coordinator will be able to help you interpret the result.

  • The results are sent to the applicant by FTDNA and shared with the DNA Study Coordinator who will include the result with our database and interpret it. No Names will be included with the posting of results so the table will list only sequences associated with different PRA family groups.

  • All the data collected to date is not affected by these changes, only new participant data.

Grants may be available for those volunteers who request financial assistance.  Grant applicants should contact the DNA Study Chairman, Nick Penington, for details.  Please note that on August 6, 2008, the PRA Board of Directors established the follow guideline for grant applicants.

There was a consensus of the Board that if PRA gives a grant to pay for the DNA study, it must be agreeable to the family to release information concerning the family line, not to include living persons. If the person pays for the study privately, they can keep the information private or make it available to the PRA.

Following those steps, here is what else happens:

  • The results are sent to the applicant by FTDNA and shared with the DNA Study Coordinator who will include the result with our database and interpret it. No Names will be included with the posting of results so the table will list only sequences associated with different PRA family groups.

  • All the data collected to date is not affected by these changes, only new participant data.

Since payment for the DNA test will be directly to FTDNA, a volunteer will not be able to claim a tax deductible donation to the Pennington Research Association, Inc. If you wish to pay for the DNA tests directly through the PRA for tax purposes, please send your payment directly to Nick Peningtonat his address which will be forwarded to the participant in his message to you.  Nick Penington will then order the test for that individual.

The PRA is a non-for-profit charitable corporation and donations to the PRA are tax deductible.  Please contact your own tax adviser for details and to confirm this.
